How Long does a Korean Perm Last and how to Care for It
A Korean perm often lasts about 3 to 6 months, but hair type, perm method and care change that. Your designer confirms what to expect for your hair. This is a general range, not a promise.

What affects how long a perm lasts
A perm changes the shape of the hair that existed when it was done. It does not change new growth. That means the curl fades in two ways: the older hair loosens over time, and the new hair at the roots grows in straight.
- Method. Heat and cold perms behave differently on different hair.
- Hair condition. Dry, bleached or damaged hair may not hold a curl as long.
- Hair length. Longer hair carries more weight, which pulls curls looser.
- Washing and styling. Heat tools and harsh shampoo can shorten the look.
The first two days
Designers often give specific instructions for the first 24 to 48 hours. Typical advice includes avoiding washing, tying the hair tightly or tucking it behind the ears. Ask your designer for the exact rule for your perm, because it depends on the method and products used.
It also helps to plan the days after the visit. Avoid a swim in a chlorinated pool, a long sauna or a hot spring in the first days, and keep the hair loose. If you are traveling, pack a wide-tooth comb and a conditioner you trust so you do not need to improvise.
Daily care that helps the curl
- Use a gentle shampoo and a conditioner, and focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends.
- Blot with a towel. Do not rub.
- Comb with a wide-tooth comb or fingers, ideally while the hair is wet and holding conditioner.
- Let the hair partly air-dry, then finish with a dryer on low heat and a diffuser if you have one.
- Apply a small amount of curl cream or lotion to damp hair and scrunch gently.
- Sleep on a smooth pillowcase or tie the hair loosely.
When the perm starts to fade
Signs include loose ends, a flat crown and a frizzy texture. Options include a trim to remove tired ends, a repair treatment, or a new perm when the hair is healthy. A root volume perm treats only the roots and is listed at ₩66,000 – ₩85,000 on WENEED’s menu, see root volume perm. WENEED also lists Shiseido hair clinic courses from ₩80,000 – ₩150,000 for care after chemical work; the designer advises timing, see hair clinic.
Heat styling and tools
Heat is the most common way to shorten a perm’s good look. If you use a curling iron or flat iron, lower the temperature and use a heat protector. A diffuser on low heat is usually kinder to curls than a nozzle blowing at close range. Digital and setting perms are made with heat, but that does not mean they like more heat later.

A simple weekly rhythm
- Most washes: shampoo the scalp, condition the lengths.
- Once a week: use a mask or a deeper conditioner, especially if the hair is also colored.
- Every few weeks: look at the ends. Splits and fuzz make curls look tired earlier.
- When the look changes: take a photo and show your designer, who can say whether a trim, a treatment or a new perm is the better step.
Mixing a perm with color or bleach
Perms and strong lightening both stress hair. Doing both close together raises the risk of breakage, so designers usually plan the order and a gap between them. Tell the designer about any color or bleach in the past months. Our guide to bleaching black Asian hair explains the other side of that decision.
Questions guests ask
How long does a Korean perm last?
Often about 3 to 6 months, but it depends on hair type, perm method and care. The designer confirms what is realistic for you.
Can I wash my hair after a perm?
Designers usually give a waiting period for the first day or two. Ask your designer for the exact time.
Does the perm wash out?
A perm is not a rinse. It fades as the treated hair loosens and new growth comes in straight.
What shampoo should I use?
A gentle shampoo and a conditioner for color-treated or permed hair are the usual advice.
Does a perm last longer on some hair?
Often yes on healthy, undamaged hair, and less on dry or bleached hair. The designer can judge this before the perm.
Can I fix a perm that has gone flat?
Often yes with a new perm, a root perm or a trim. The designer checks the condition first.
