What an S-curl perm looks like
“S-curl” (S컬) hair has a gentle double curve in each section, so the hair moves in a smooth wave instead of a single turn or a tight spiral. The wave usually starts around the cheek or jaw level and runs down to the ends. It is a popular look in Korean hair photos because it adds volume without looking tightly curled.
No single technical definition exists. Wave width, height and softness all change from designer to designer. A photo shows more than the word does.
Who it suits
- Medium to long hair: the wave needs length to show two bends. Collarbone length and longer gives the clearest result.
- Flat or heavy hair: straight hair that falls flat can gain body from a wave.
- Long layers: waves follow the layers, so a layered cut helps. Ask the designer whether to cut before or at the same visit as the perm.
- Daily low-effort styling: a loose S-wave can look neat with a quick dry and a little cream.
Wave size: small, medium or wide
Most of the difference between S-curl photos is size. Use these as rough steps and let the designer adjust.
- Wide, soft waves: relaxed and elegant, and they fade into a natural wave over time.
- Medium waves: a clear S shape that is easy to notice and still looks natural.
- Small waves: more bounce, closer to a curl than a wave. If you want something tighter and thicker, the hippie perm is a different style.
Thin hair may hold a tighter wave more easily. Thick, heavy hair may relax faster, so the designer may choose a firmer set.

Prepare your hair
Tell the designer about bleach, color, earlier perms and straightening, with dates. A chemical perm works differently on hair that is already lightened or dyed, and weak hair may need care first. Come with clean, product-free hair if you can, and bring two or three photos that show the wave from the side and back.
If you plan to color as well, ask which service should go first. Doing both on the same day is not always advised.
Daily styling
To keep the S-shape, comb gently when wet, scrunch in a curl cream and let it air-dry or use a diffuser. Brushing dry waves can pull them into frizz. Flat irons and curling irons work against the perm. Most perms soften over time. The designer can tell you when to return for a touch-up.
