What a root volume perm does
The perm is applied only to the first few centimeters of hair near the scalp. It bends the hair upward at the root, so it stands a little taller and the rest of the hair falls from that height. The ends and mid-lengths are not curled. The result is body and lift, not waves.
The effect works on the section that was treated. As hair grows, the lifted part moves away from the scalp and the volume gradually settles.
When it is the right service
- Fine or soft hair that lies flat by midday.
- A crown that looks thin from the side because hair collapses.
- Bangs or a front section that will not stay lifted.
- Short hair for men or women, where a full perm would be too much.
It is not a treatment for hair loss and does not change how much hair you have. It only changes the direction the hair stands. If hair thinning worries you, a scalp treatment is a separate service and the designer can explain what it can and cannot do.

How to prepare
Come with your usual parting and tell the designer where you want the lift: crown, top, front or the whole head. Mention:
- Recent bleach, color or a perm, with dates. Roots that were just colored can be sensitive.
- Scalp dryness, itching or irritation.
- How you style your hair in the morning, and whether you use a dryer.
Styling and aftercare
Avoid tying hair tightly at the top of the head in the first days, since a band pressed on the roots can leave a dent in the lift. A light blow-dry at the roots, lifting hair upward with a round brush or fingers, brings out the shape. Heavy oils on the roots weigh the lift down. Ask the designer how long to wait before washing. A root perm usually lasts until the regrowth leaves the treated section, so timing varies from person to person.
