Bleaching Black Asian Hair in Korea
Black Asian hair can be bleached to blonde in Korea, but the shade you reach depends on your starting color, past dye and how much lightening the hair can take. Pale shades often need more than one round.

What happens as dark hair lifts
Bleach lightens hair in stages. Dark brown or black hair usually moves through red-brown, orange and yellow before it becomes pale. Each stage is a point where you can stop. Stopping at a warm light brown is far gentler than pushing to ice blonde.
Designers talk about “levels” to describe the stages. You do not need the numbers. A photo of the shade you want, plus a photo of your natural color, is enough for a designer to estimate the steps.
Dark hair varies in thickness and strength from person to person, so two people with the same starting color can lift at different speeds. That is why a test on a small section is a reasonable request.
Why previous dye changes everything
Natural black hair and black-dyed hair are not the same. Dye is built up in layers, and very dark dye can resist lifting or lift unevenly. If you have colored your hair black or dark brown, say so, and give the date. Hair that was permed or straightened recently also needs a gentler plan. The bleach price page explains what affects the quote.
Terms to use at a Korean salon
- 탈색 (talsaek): bleaching or lightening.
- 톤다운 (tone-down): making a color darker or less bright. See tone down color.
- 애쉬 (ash): a cool, gray-leaning tone. See ash color.
- Red-tone removal: neutralizing warm red tones, which WENEED lists as a tone-correction color.
Say clearly whether you want a cool, warm or neutral result. Write the words down or show a photo to avoid a misunderstanding.
Plan for more than one round
A pale or pastel shade on dark hair is often split into two rounds, either in the same visit or across visits. The break protects the hair from over-processing. Read double bleach for how the second round works. Pastel and fashion shades such as pastel pink need a light base first.
Deadlines matter too. If you are traveling in a week, tell the designer, and ask for a plan that fits the time rather than a rushed result.
Color stages you can expect
As a rough guide, the order for most dark hair is: dark brown, red-brown, copper, orange, gold, yellow and pale yellow. Each step takes more time and more stress on the hair. Many people are happy at a warm gold or a light brown, which a designer can reach with less risk than a platinum shade.
Toner is a second step that adjusts the tone after the hair has lightened, for example to reduce yellow. A toner does not lighten. It changes the color of the lightened base, and it fades with washing.
Questions to ask the designer
- How many rounds will I need for this shade?
- What is the lightest shade my hair can safely reach?
- Will you test a small section first?
- How should I care for the hair between rounds?
- How long will the tone last, and what happens as it fades?
After bleaching
Lightened hair is more porous and dries out sooner. Use gentle shampoo, limit heat styling and expect warm tones to return as the toner fades. A treatment such as damaged hair repair can help if the ends feel dry.

Questions guests ask
Can black Asian hair be bleached to blonde?
Often yes, but pale blonde usually takes more than one round, and the designer decides how far the hair can safely go.
Why does my hair turn orange after bleaching?
Dark hair passes through orange and yellow as it lightens. A toner then adjusts the tone.
Is bleaching in Korea different?
The chemistry is the same. Korean salons often plan the shade carefully and may split lightening into stages.
What should I tell the designer?
Your natural color, every past dye, perm or straightening with dates, and a photo of the shade you want.
Should I wash my hair before bleaching?
Usually the hair should be clean but not freshly scrubbed, and the designer may give specific advice.
How much is bleach at WENEED?
It is not on the printed menu, so the designer quotes it after checking your hair.
