When two rounds are used
One round of bleach lifts dark hair to orange or yellow-orange. To get from there to a pale yellow or near-white base, a second round is often needed. Double bleach is therefore the usual route for platinum, silver, white-blonde and many pastels. If you only want a light brown or a milk tone, one round is usually enough. One sitting or two visits
Two rounds can be done in one long visit or split across two. The choice depends on your hair, and it is the designer’s call. Splitting gives the hair days or weeks of rest and lets the designer judge the result in between. A single long visit is faster but puts more stress on the hair in one go.
Do not plan an event for the same day without asking. A second round can take longer than expected, and the designer explains the schedule for your hair.
Hair that should not be double bleached
Some hair may not be safe for two rounds. The designer will probably advise against it, or ask to wait, if your hair:
- Feels gummy or stretchy when wet.
- Breaks easily or has many short, snapped ends.
- Has had a perm or straightening treatment recently.
- Has several layers of old dark dye.
The designer may offer a lighter goal, a gradual plan, or a treatment first. This is protection, not a refusal to help.
Managing the damage
Bleaching twice is a high-stress process, even when it is done carefully. The goal is to limit damage, not to remove it. During the process, the designer controls timing and strength. At home, you can help by:
- Skipping heat tools for the first weeks, or using a low setting with protection.
- Using a moisture mask on a regular schedule.
- Avoiding more chemical services until the hair recovers.
