Korean Scalp Care Routine

A Korean scalp care routine treats the scalp like facial skin: wash gently, rinse fully, dry the roots and keep heavy products off them. Salons add scalp treatments on top, and the WENEED Seomyeon Lotte menu lists a slow-aging head spa cut at ₩50,000.

The routine in five steps

Korean scalp care is usually described as a short sequence rather than one special product. A typical version looks like this:

  1. Rinse first. Wet the hair with lukewarm water for a minute before any shampoo goes on. Hot water can leave the scalp feeling tight.
  2. Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths. Foam the shampoo in your hands, then massage it into the scalp with the pads of your fingers. Do not scratch with nails.
  3. Rinse longer than feels necessary. Leftover shampoo or conditioner is a common reason a scalp feels itchy or greasy by evening.
  4. Condition the lengths only. Keep conditioner and hair packs (헤어팩) away from the roots unless the label says it is made for the scalp.
  5. Dry the roots. Use a dryer on a medium setting, moving it, and finish with cool air. Going to bed with a damp scalp is a habit many Korean routines tell you to avoid.

Is your scalp oily, dry or sensitive?

Korean product labels often sort scalps into three types, and it helps to know the words: 지성 (oily), 건성 (dry) and 민감성 (sensitive).

  • Oily: roots look flat or greasy within a day. Gentle daily washing is common advice, and so is avoiding rich oils near the roots.
  • Dry: tight feeling after washing, small dry flakes. Lukewarm water and a milder shampoo are the usual first changes.
  • Sensitive: stings or reddens easily. Fragrance and strong scrubs are often the first things people drop.

Many people are a mix, with an oily crown and dry hairline. This page is general hair advice, not a diagnosis. If your scalp is painful, very red, flaking heavily for weeks, or your hair is thinning, see a doctor (a 피부과, dermatology clinic) before trying products or salon treatments.

The extra steps: scrubs, tonics and ampoules

On top of washing, Korean routines often add a weekly or less frequent step. These are the common types you will see on shelves:

  • Scalp scrub or peeling: a gritty or acid-based product to loosen build-up. Use it less often than shampoo and follow the label. Skip it if the scalp is irritated.
  • Scalp tonic or essence (토닉, 에센스): a light liquid left on after washing and drying.
  • Ampoule (앰플): a concentrated leave-in. More is not better, so use the amount on the pack.

Patch-test anything new on a small area first. If you are choosing between shelves of similar bottles, our guide on how to read Korean hair-care labels explains the terms.

When a salon scalp service adds something

A salon can look at your scalp up close, deep-cleanse it and massage it, which is hard to copy at home. People usually book one when the scalp feels clogged after a hot summer, a long trip or heavy styling product use. It does not replace a daily routine.

Two names to know: a head spa focuses on cleansing and massage, while a scalp treatment is usually aimed at a specific scalp concern. Our guide head spa vs scalp treatment shows how to choose, and what a Korean head spa is describes the experience.

FAQ

Questions guests ask

How often should I wash my scalp in a Korean routine?

Many people wash daily or every second day, depending on how oily the scalp is. If your scalp feels tight after washing, try lukewarm water and a milder shampoo before changing anything else.

Do I need a scalp scrub?

No. It is an optional extra that some people use now and then to loosen build-up. Skip it if your scalp is sensitive or irritated.

Is a head spa the same as scalp care at home?

No. A head spa is a salon service with cleansing and massage. It sits on top of a home routine and does not replace washing and rinsing well.

Can scalp care stop hair loss?

We make no such claim. Scalp care keeps the scalp clean and comfortable, but thinning hair should be checked by a doctor.

How much is the head spa cut at WENEED Seomyeon Lotte?

The slow-aging head spa cut is ₩50,000 on the current menu, listed as an event price. Your designer confirms the price before starting.
