What sun, salt and travel do to hair
Strong sun, sea water, chlorine and dry airplane or air-conditioned air dry out the hair surface. Dry hair feels rough, tangles easily and looks dull. Color-treated hair can also fade or turn brassy after a lot of sun. These are general effects. How much your hair changes depends on its condition before the trip.
Step 1: wash and detangle gently
Rinse with fresh water and use a mild shampoo to remove salt, sunscreen and chlorine. Apply conditioner to the lengths and comb from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb. Let the hair air-dry partly, then use a dryer on a low or medium setting. Skip the iron for a few days, since hot tools add stress to hair that is already dry.
Step 2: decide what to cut
Split or broken ends cannot be repaired, only removed. If the ends look frayed, a trim is more effective than any treatment. Ask the designer how much has to go and what keeps the shape. What a treatment can and cannot do
A clinic treatment is a salon service. It often leaves hair smoother and softer, and how long that lasts depends on your hair and how you care for it. It will not undo heavy bleaching, and it will not make a damaged hair strand new. The designer should tell you honestly if your hair needs a cut, a break from chemical services or just time. Preventing the next round
- Before the trip: trim split ends, and avoid fresh bleach or a perm in the days before a long beach stay.
- On the beach: wet the hair with fresh water before swimming, since hair that is already wet absorbs less salt or chlorine. Wear a hat or tie the hair up.
- After swimming: rinse with fresh water soon after, and use conditioner on the lengths.
- On the plane: cabin air is dry, so a light leave-in on the ends can help.
- At night: do not sleep with wet hair, and avoid tight ties.
